Mauna Lani’s Twilight Tradition Lives On

Under the Full Moon
On the Big Island, stories live in the land and come alive through the music that connects generations. For over two decades, the Twilight at Kalāhuipua‘a concert series has brought together some of Hawai‘i’s most treasured voices, creating a space where tradition and community thrive. Each month, as the full moon rises over the Kohala Coast, those stories take center stage at the historic Eva Parker Woods Cottage. Held on the Saturday closest to the full moon, this beloved gathering has become the cultural heartbeat of Mauna Lani – where music, storytelling, and the spirit of aloha come together under the stars.
The History of Kalahuipua‘a:
The story of Kalahuipua‘a, now known as Mauna Lani Resort, dates back centuries, to a time when this coastal area was home to a small fishing village. A portion of their daily catch was offered as tribute to the local Ali‘i, or chief, who governed the region. Today, the legacy of this traditional lifestyle lives on in the seven historic fishponds that have been carefully restored and preserved on the resort grounds. Guided tours of the area offer deeper insight into the ingenious aquaculture system that once fed generations.
Eventually, Kalahuipua‘a became part of the Parker Ranch estate and was used as a seaside retreat. Along the shoreline stands the Eva Parker Woods Cottage, now a museum, originally built by James Woods of Kahua Ranch as a wedding gift for his wife, Eva Parker. In 1936, the property was purchased by Francis H. I‘i Brown, a champion golfer and descendant of ali‘i lineage, for $6,000—marking the beginning of a new chapter in the land’s storied past.

Following a $100 million renovation by Auberge Resorts Collection, Mauna Lani has reemerged as a world-class destination with a strong emphasis on Hawaiian culture. From locally inspired design and cuisine to hands-on workshops and cultural experiences, the resort thoughtfully weaves tradition into every guest touchpoint.
