Mauna Lani History

The story of Mauna Lani Resort begins a very long time ago, when the region then known as Kalahuipua‘a was a small fishing village, likely run by an extended family, who would use part of their catch to pay “taxes” to the ali‘i chief who ruled the area. The seven historic fishponds have been restored and maintained on the resort property, and escorted tours share much more information about the remarkable aquaculture system of the time.

In time, Kalahuipua‘a became part of Parker Ranch land holdings, and was used as a recreation area. The Eva Parker Woods Cottage, now a museum along the shore, was built by Kahua Ranch owner James Woods, for his bride, Eva Parker. In 1936, Francis H. I‘i Brown, champion golfer and son of a notable ali‘i chief, purchased Kalahuipua‘a and the cottage for $6,000.

In the 1960’s Francis attended the Olympics in Tokyo, where he met Mr. Noboru Gotoh, leader of Japan’s largest business conglomerate, and talked with him about investment possibilities for Hawai‘i Island. As a result, the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel opened its doors in 1983, and quickly became recognized among the best hotels in Hawai’i.

Today, following a $100 million renovation by new owners, Auberge Resorts Collection, the Mauna Lani continues to welcome discriminating guests from around the world. The hotel has revived and enhanced its commitment to sharing Hawaiian culture throughout the property, in design and décor, use of local products and foods, style of services, and numerous thoughtful activities, learning workshops and cultural experiences. The Hale ‘I‘ke, “house of learning,” is centrally located in the main Lobby, and welcomes all to come in and talk story with long time cultural advisor Danny Kaniela Akaka.

The Beach

All Mauna Lani homeowners have access to the amenities and facilities the hotel provides. These include the private Mauna Lani Beach Club, a gated oceanfront shoreline with a peaceful bay for swimming, snorkeling or soaking up the sun. Lounge chairs are provided, and cabanas, and showers are available. Napua Restaurant is located inside the Club, featuring fresh local cuisine and breathtaking ocean views.

Other Mauna Lani Resort restaurants include the legendary CanoeHouse, HaLani at the pool, the Fairmont Orchid’s oceanfront Brown’s Beach House, poolside HaleKai, and deli-style Brown’s Beach House. Nearby, Shops at Mauna Lani offers options include Pele’s Wok, Tommy Bahama’s, and Foodland Farms grocery, with bakery, deli section, and excellent selection of wines and local craft beers.

Golf

The Mauna Lani Resort is home to two championship golf courses, and, since the Francis H. I‘i Brown North and South Courses opened in 1981, they have hosted many of golf’s greats, including Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino and Gary Player. With some of the most-photographed over-the-ocean shots in golf, this extraordinary golf experience welcomes players at every level.

Tennis

Tennis players have access to Mauna Lani’s six hard-surface tennis courts, lighted for night play, plus the Fairmont Orchid’s Tennis Pavilion, with ten hard courts including a sunken stadium court.

Spa

At the Fairmont Orchid, the Spa Without Walls is so-named because each of its massage hale are freestanding huts, set in a garden with waterfall, or down at the beach in a cabana. Auberge Spa at the Mauna Lani stands out because of its commitment to spotlight Hawaii therapies and products such as local oils, herbs, honeys, and flowers.

Shopping

The Shops at Mauna Lani is an attractive open air mall with anchor stores Tommy Bahama retail and restaurant at one end, and Foodland Farms grocery at the other. In between, shoppers can explore unique island style gifts, beach wear, resort fashion, fine art and more. And, when public health restrictions are lifted, the Shops offer hula shows, mini-concerts, food events and special holiday presentations.
